The guild and craft church of St. Stephen, built between 1439 and 1466, is one of the most important late Gothic church buildings in Austria. Its main architect was Stephan Krumenauer.

The mighty, three-aisled hall church, with a tower height of 87 meters, one of the highest in Austria, dates from the 15th century and is an important example of late Gothic architecture in art history. The towering, seven-story, slender tower is a landmark of the town of Braunau and the Innviertel. The baroque tower roof was only added in the 18th century.

Inside there is a three-aisled, seven-bay nave. Twelve side chapels (guild chapels) are formed by recessed buttresses. The view upwards shows an artistic net rib vault. The capitals of the mighty pillars are decorated with apostles and angel heads.

The church's furnishings are rich in works of art from the time of the church's foundation to the present day. The famous and valuable baker's altar dates from the late 15th century and is one of the few Gothic winged altars that have survived in Upper Austria.

There are valuable epitaphs on the church's outer walls, including on the north side that of the famous Hans Staininger, the "man with the long beard", who was the city captain of Braunau in the 16th century.
