The railway line Kempen - Venlo was planned on the basis of a contract between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Prussia between 1864 and 1866, built by the Rhenish Railway Company in Cologne from 1866 and put into operation on 1 January 1868. The German Federal Railways shut down the freight traffic between Kempen and Grefrath as well as the passenger traffic between Kempen and Kaldenkirchen on 30 April 1983.
