There was a primitive temple (=church) built in 1615 on the initiative of the island captain Blas de Acosta Padrón. This primitive sanctuary of small dimensions had to be replaced.

The current one is a three-aisled temple built in 1818. One of the most striking features of the temple is the bell tower, which is about 35 meters away from the rest of the temple. The two lower bodies date from 1880 and the higher one from 1957. This bell tower is located on Mount Joapira.
