The roller pole was on the corner on the inside of the towpath. The 'hunters' walked around the outside with the line, which was guided via the roller, so that the rope did not wear out, but left deep welts, especially in wooden rollers, due to the tension and heavy forces. Iron guide brackets are often mounted at the top and bottom of the roller pole, sometimes with an elegant curl. These brackets were intended to prevent the tow line from running off the roller pole (from rtvnof.nl).
