Merkstein is first mentioned in 1123. At that time a wooden church in honor of St. Willibrord 658-739 was already more than 400 years old. According to tradition, the wooden church was built in 701.

Alt-Merkstein is the village around the St.Willibrord church. The brick hall was built in 1746. The west tower in front has a baroque dome, the basements are made of quarry stone from a previous building from the 13th century. The two standing wooden figures are attributed to Gabriel de Grupello, who spent the last years of his life at the nearby Erenstein Castle. In the churchyard around the church there are a number of grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
