The church in Helsa is unusual because it has a historic, free-standing bell tower that also serves as a gate. The core of the church dates back to the 13th/14th century and was completely renovated in 1657, including the tower.
The wall paintings from 1593 are impressive and are among the oldest Protestant church paintings. They show biblical motifs.
The church tower still has a very old bell that was stolen from the church in Herstelle on the Weser in the chaos of the Thirty Years' War and found its way here.
