A beautiful lawn next to the Limes Tower. Information about the Barbarenstein can be found above in the post by Oli from Fauerbach

The Barbarian Stone stands on the northernmost bulge of the Wetterau Limes, part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, about 1.5 kilometers (as the crow flies) northwest of the Pohlheim district of Grüningen.

There are four Latin inscriptions carved into the stone, one on each side.

The name “Barbarian Stone” comes from the inscription on the south-facing side:

      MEMORIAE ROMANORVM BARBARVS ANNO MDCCCCXII

“In memory of the Romans, a barbarian in 1912.”

On the back, facing north, is the inscription:

      LIMES IMPERII ROMANI

      “Border of the Roman Empire.”

The name of the person who built it is carved on the narrow sides.

      ROBERTVS SOMMER CVM VXORE
      “Robert Sommer with wife”
      CIVIS GISSENSIS
      “a citizen of Giessen”.

It invites you to linger. There are benches in the shade of the Limes Tower. There you can enjoy the peace and quiet.
