For us Ruhrpottlers, the Rhine-Herne Canal is like the Rhine.
Every meter is a piece of vacation.

HistoryThe construction of the canal, which lasted from April 5, 1906 to July 17, 1914, took over eight years and cost around 60 million imperial marks. It was managed by the Royal Canal Construction Directorate in Essen, which was founded in 1906. The geomorphological conditions of the Emscher Valley were largely used for the construction. In parts, particularly in Herne and Gelsenkirchen, the canal was built in the former riverbed of the Emscher, whose course had shifted slightly to the north due to the previous straightening.Plans to expand the Emscher itself into a shipping route, known as the Emscher Canal, had already been presented by the industrialist William Thomas Mulvany in Düsseldorf in the second half of the 19th century. An Emscher Canal Committee was founded in Essen in 1873. Initially, the plans to canalize the Emscher were pursued further. The technical feasibility was presented by the committee in 1875.
