The first wooden predecessor of the church in Riesigk could have been built as early as 1745.[2] From 1780 onwards, Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau had a watchtower, school and community bakery built. These were intended to beautify the town's appearance - similar to the church that was built later. He had the church built between 1797 and 1800.[1] Georg Christoph Hesekiel was the architect.[2][3] The church was restored in 1997.[1] In autumn 2011, the church was again damaged by a storm.[4]
