What has long been a matter of course for us on the mainland, namely simply turning on the water tap, was only made possible on Hooge in 1970 with the construction of a water pipe. Since there are no freshwater sources on the Halligen, traditional methods had to be used for drinking water and for watering animals.
Almost all of the terps on the Halligen therefore had so-called Fethinge in which rainwater was collected for the animals. This was of course out of the question for the residents, so cisterns were built for this purpose, called Sooden here. A very clear sketch can be found on the Fething on the Hanswarft.
