    History

With the death of Maria von Jever, the lordship of Jever fell to the county of Oldenburg. However, the Black Brack separated the two parts of the country. A connection was only possible via East Frisian territory, which claimed tolls for this. Therefore, against the will of the East Frisian settlements, Count Johann VII of Oldenburg planned to embank the entire bay. In 1593, a first partial step was taken, in which a embankment leading north from the southern embankment line to the island of Ellens was built. In 1595, the two Oberahmer islands were reconnected to the mainland on the north side of Jever. From 1596 to 1597, another embankment was built, which led from Jeringhave via the island of Hiddels to the island of Ellens, thus draining the part of the bay south of the island of Ellens.

In 1597, East Frisia objected to the embankment measures and in 1599 sued the Oldenburgers before the Imperial Chamber Court in Speyer.

The Ellenser Damm is a dam built between 1596 and 1615 that ran across the mudflats of the Schwarzer Brack and, with its approximately 4,000 m long embankment, connected the two islands of Ellens and Ahm, which lay as geest islands in the Wadden Sea of the Schwarzer Brack.
