The cathedral was built by Protestant states in 1578. It is the oldest and most representative Protestant church in the German-speaking region. With its numerous niches between the pillars, it is also the earliest pillar church. After the Counter-Reformation, the church was handed over to the Catholic Jesuits in 1604, who rebuilt it in the Baroque style. The interior features lavish ceiling paintings, stucco work, statues and carvings.
