Lend Canal

It is really picturesque here along the quiet Lend Canal, which runs into the city center of Klagenfurt. Frozen over in winter, it offers a nice place for ice skating.

Since 1527, the picturesque, 4 km long waterway has connected Klagenfurt city center with Lake Wörthersee. It was created by the country estates to supply building materials, wood and stone for the expansion of the city.
The Lend Canal once served to supply the city with building and heating material and also fed the city moat, which is around 34 meters wide and 7 meters deep, with water. The Wörthersee fishermen brought their catch to the Klagenfurt market via this traffic route. The canal ends in the Lendhafen. The surrounding walls, stairs and access ramps are made of Pörtschach marble.
From the Lend Canal you have an atmospheric view of the many villas along the waterway. Along the Lend there is also an idyllic walking and cycling path on which inline skaters also make their rounds. And in winter the old waterway is ice skating rink to Lake Wörthersee.The Stone Bridge, today a meeting point for young people in summer, was built in 1535 and is the oldest bridge over the Lend Canal. Interesting is the semi-arch, which, when reflected in the water, turns into a round arch. In 1966 it was adapted to modern traffic.
