One of the last peat bogs that once formed the open landscape of this plateau. The subsoil is composed of acidic rocks of revinia, quartzites and black phyllades.
The area is dominated by groups of peatlands, but there are also rushes with Juncus acutiflorus (Juncion acutiflori), sedge meadows with Carex rostrata (Caricetum rostrato-vesicariae), some peatlands with Narthecium ossifragum, remains of exploited and more or less dry peatlands, thickets of Salix aurita and downy birch forests.
This peatland has been studied several times at the botanical and phytosociological level, in particular by FROMENT.

      Location

The moor lies in the border area of the town of Lübbecke and the municipality of Hille in the Minden-Lübbecke district. To the north it is bordered by the Mittelland Canal. For several years now, the area to the east, a 2 to 3 km wide strip south of the canal, including the Minden meadows, which are wet meadows used extensively for agriculture, has also been considered part of the "Großes Torfmoor nature reserve".

        Großes Torfmoor

The Großes Torfmoor nature reserve (also: Hiller Moor or Nettelstedter Moor) is a raised bog in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia in the municipalities of Lübbecke and Hille. The moor lies in a lowland between the Wiehen Hills and the Mittelland Canal and, at 467 hectares, is the most important raised bog in Westphalia.
