    About St. Catherine's Church

St. Catherine's is the church of the former Franciscan monastery in Lübeck and was once the center of this order in the entire Baltic region.

Built around 1300, its simple, elegant form makes it one of the most beautiful brick churches in the city.

Visitors enter the light-flooded interior from the street. The light color of the walls and pillars with their red painted ashlar pattern corresponds to the exposed original version from the 14th century.

The history of this church is very extensive. If you would like to find out more,

St. Catherine's Church (also St. Catherine's in Lübeck) in Lübeck, a former Franciscan monastery church. The building's core dates back to the early 14th century and has been structurally altered several times.

After the Reformation, the monastery was converted into a Latin school (Katharineum) in 1531.

The building is now a museum church and part of the Katharineum high school.

This church no longer holds services. Today, St. Catherine's Church is purely a museum church, which presents its eventful history with its architecture and rich interior.

Currently under renovation. Admission during the construction period is €2. Some areas are closed off.

The floor is completely covered with gravestones, as St. Catherine's Church was the preferred burial place for Lübeck citizens until the early 19th century. This can also be seen in the ornate baroque and classicist burial chapels in the south aisle.
