It is also called the "Amazon of the North." With its pristine riparian vegetation and its almost jungle-like character, it is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Schleswig-Holstein. Extensive alder swamp forests are home to otters, kingfishers, and irises. The former inner-German border once ran along the riverbank. Today, the Wakenitz River can be experienced from the water by excursion boat or canoe, from the northern shore of Lake Ratzeburg to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
