You are here in the heart of the former Roman settlement. The triumphal arch from 16 BC is fairly well preserved here. It now stands directly in front of the cathedral.

"The Roman triumphal arch, called the Arc de Carpentras, is located at the back of the Palace of Justice. On its east side it shows two prisoners, one dressed in fur (possibly a Germanic), the other in a tunic. It is assumed that this is a man from the Orient due to the exotic clothing for southern Gaul." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpentras
