The Gothic Holy Cross Chapel is located on the edge of the municipal cemetery of Hechingen, south of the city on the country road to the district of Boll.

Friedrich XII, Count of Zollern from 1401 to 1426, known as the Öttinger, donated the chapel in 1403.

The following tradition is linked to the origin of the chapel: a servant of the count shot at a crucifix there in order to become an infallible marksman (Freischütz motif). He was then unable to move from the spot and was beheaded. The chapel was built as atonement.

The story already appears in the Maleficarum Maleficarum and in the Chronicle of the Counts of Zimmern. It is depicted on two panels from 1729 (as is the wayside shrine in which the crucifix was located, in the Hohenzollern State Museum in Hechingen). A number of versions of the legend of the hellish shot exist from the 19th century.

The chapel was already established in the Middle Ages. It belonged to the ecclesiastical and territorial environment of the Zollern-Hechingen region and certainly had significance as a place of worship and cult, possibly also with border or domain church affiliation.
