The library is the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences. The history of the library begins in 1726, when the Świdnitz jurist Johann Gottlieb Milich bequeathed 4,000 books, 200 manuscripts, and 500 coins, along with numerous curiosities and curiosities, to the city of Görlitz in his will, stipulating that they be freely available to the public. He became the founder of the first publicly accessible academic library in Görlitz. Further donations led to the growth of the collection. In 1799, the Upper Lusatian Society for the Promotion of Natural and Historical Studies was founded by the Görlitz jurist, historian, and linguist Karl Gottlob Anton and the Meffersdorf natural scientist Adolf Traugott von Gersdorf. In 1801, they donated their own libraries, each containing over 10,000 volumes, to the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences.
