The Lion Tower – also known as the Powder Tower – is a historic battery tower first documented in 1535. It is located at a point in the city wall that was breached in the 19th century and only closed again in 1980.

The tower was built to reinforce the city fortifications and placed in the moat between the gun parapets. It has a horseshoe-shaped floor plan and consists of three stories, each slightly projecting from a round-arch frieze. On the city side, there is a smooth gable with a low, hipped roof, while the field side is characterized by a gun platform with a bulging parapet.

One of the many towers along the city wall.

The tower was probably built before 1533, but was first mentioned in a report in 1546 as the "Lewturm". The rest of a year number ..52 indicates that structural changes were probably made to the tower again in 1522. The floor plan of the five-storey bulwark is horseshoe-shaped: the side facing the enemy is semicircular, the side facing the city is straight and pierced by windows. The Lion Tower was used as a so-called gun tower. In 1883, apartments were built into the Lion Tower to provide accommodation for the homeless.
