It owes its name to a Benedictine monastery, which was probably founded by Emperor Barbarossa at the end of the 12th century. This monastery was closed after the Reformation. The deserted monastery buildings were used for other purposes as early as 1562, during the lifetime of the last abbess, and the third church now stands here. The first was destroyed by the Hussites in 1429, the second was demolished in 1860 because of its dilapidation.
According to plans by the builder K.A. Flaminius was built on the same site, this time facing south to north, a neo-Gothic church, which was consecrated in 1862. It miraculously survived the destruction of the city in 1945 and is now, after years of restoration, a gem in the city.
