The shipping on the Stecknitz, which opened in 1398, had significantly more locks than the Elbe-Trave Canal, which was completed in 1900. Directly on the Möllner city limits there was a “staircase of locks” consisting of several locks; about 3 km north of the Möllner Ziegelsee there were two locks, the small and large Donnerschleuse. It was a simple barrage lock, the other a box lock with two gates.
Today the large one still exists in a “modern” form (i.e. it is now 115 years old…). A locking process takes a few minutes. The stretch of canal north of Mölln is an idyllic landscape and the artificially created canal looks like a natural river landscape with gentle bends. By the way, don't worry: the name of the Donnerschleuse does not indicate the frequent and dangerous storms that occur here. According to an old custom, the lock was named “Donner” after the lock keeper family.
