Donnerschleuse on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal

Beautiful lock! It's worth stopping for a moment and watching the ships.

The shipping service on the Stecknitz, opened in 1398, had significantly more locks than the Elbe-Trave Canal, which was completed in 1900. Immediately at the Möllner city limits there was a "lock staircase" consisting of several locks, approx. 3 km north of the Möllner Ziegelsee there were two locks, the small and large thunder lock. It was a simple lock, the other a box lock with two gates.
Today the big one still exists in a "modern" form (i.e. it is now 115 years old ...). A lock process takes a few minutes. The piece of canal north of Mölln is an idyllic landscape and the artificially created canal looks like a natural river landscape with gentle bends. By the way, do not worry: the name of the thunder lock does not bear witness to the frequent and dangerous storms that take place here.
