Salzmannstraße is an old trade route leading from Ilmenau to Schmücke. It is about 13 kilometers long and has no significant inclines, so that salt and other goods could be transported by carriages. However, it does not bear its name because mainly salt was transported, but because it was built by the forester Ernst Julius Theodor Salzmann (1792-1855).

Salzmannstraße is an old trade route that leads across the Thuringian Forest. This 13-kilometer driveway to the Rennsteig was built with a low slope so that it could also be used by coaches without Vorspann. On the road mainly salt, but also other goods such as potash, dyer's wool, ores, salted fish were transported. However, the street does not have its name from the transported salt, but from its builder Ernst Julius Theodor Salzmann. (Source: Wikipedia) Today it is a beautiful hiking trail from Ilmenau, via Mönchshof, up to the Schmücke.
