During the Second World War, in the period of the German occupation and the Italian Social Republic, Fernando Torreggiani, an anti-fascist Catholic, contributed significantly to the rescue of the six members of the Jewish Melli Rossi family from Ferrara, saving them from deportation and guide them to expatriation in nearby Switzerland. For this commitment of solidarity, the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem awarded Fernando Torreggiani the high honor of the Righteous Among the Nations on March 4, 2001.
