First mentioned in documents in 998, the church has belonged to the Knights Templar since the 12th century, as can be seen from a document of 1148. The Templars maintained a pilgrims' hospice (la Magione), from which the church takes its name. After the suppression of the Templars in 1312, the church passed to the Order of St. John, which later took the name of the Order of Malta. The church passed from the Order of Malta to the diocese and became a parish, which still exists today. In the adjacent oratory, built in 1526 and named after the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, is the local center of the Salesians of Don Bosco of Siena, which, inspired by the spirituality of Don Bosco, has been present and active for some years for the Christian and human education of young people. The church is still the place for meetings and celebrations of the Sienese section of the Sovereign Order of Malta. In 1980 it hosted the then Grand Master, Angelo de Mojana di Cologna, on the occasion of the ceremony of conferring the title of Sovereign by the Order on the Contrade of the Porcupine, in whose territory the church is located.
