On 8 August 1956, the largest mining disaster in Belgian history took place in the mine 'Le bois du Cazier' in Marcinelle. Of the 262 miners who died, 33 came from Hageland and the Zuiderkempen (and that's the region we are in here). Eleven victims, four of whom were from Betekom itself, were buried in the cemetery across the street where you can find this bronze sculpture, 'Silence'. It was made by Roger De Haes and dates from 2006. There is also a monument in the cemetery, from 1958, depicting a miner's lamp.
