As in other cities of the Veneto, the Republic of Venice erected a column in Verona in 1523, topped with the Lion of St. Mark as its emblem. It stands in the center of the famous Piazza delle Erbe and is crowned with a statue of the winged Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice. This makes it an important symbol of the time when Verona was under Venetian rule.
In 1797, the French occupiers propped up the column. When the people of Verona re-erected it in 1883, they had to replace the lion.
