Finally, another look into the Grauwackesteinbruch, where people are still working hard.

"Lindlar likes to describe itself as "rich". The history and development of the community were and are shaped by the rocks that can be found in the local quarries. Greywacke, a grey-brown to grey-greenish sedimentary rock, has been mined in the quarries for over 300 years and processed. The natural stone is used to produce floor slabs, window frames, walls and paving stones and is now known and loved far beyond local borders.

Numerous historical buildings in and around Lindlar are built with greywacke, the best known and most visible example of this is the Catholic parish church of St. Severin in the heart of the town center.

In addition, impressive fossils can be found in the rocks of the Lindlar quarries. These fossils, which are millions of years old, can be discovered during a fossil hunt, in which visitors can explore large blocks of stone themselves using a hammer and chisel. Some areas of the quarries can also be visited on your own during a hike on the Steinhauerpfad."

The quarry at the Hermitage may look wildly romantic, but the rule here is: entry is prohibited! Because it is one of a total of four companies that continue to mine greywacke in Lindlar.

There were once 40 companies in 1872, but just six years later there were only 21.
