A resting stone is a single or multi-part bench that was used in earlier times as a resting place for porters.

The resting stones that have been preserved mainly date from the period between the 16th and 19th centuries, when farmers, farmhands, maids, messengers, peddlers or traders still carried heavy loads on their backs or on their heads. Most resting stones are significantly higher than normal benches so that users could pick up the goods they were transporting themselves after a rest.

Rest benches were usually erected in places that were suitable for resting, for example before, during or after an ascent or descent, halfway along connecting roads, at crossroads or in exposed places that allowed a view of the rest of the route. The locations were often chosen near groups of trees that provided shade. On older maps, such benches are occasionally marked with the abbreviation Rhb.

In Hesse, the term Ruh is common, which is still remembered in field names such as An der Ruh, Bei der Ruh or Ruhacker. The term Mahnstein, used in the Hanau and Frankfurt area as far as the Rheingau, is reminiscent of the so-called Mahne or Manne, regional words for carrying things on your back.

This rest dates back to the 18th century and has been partially supplemented.
