The street begins at the Porte de la Craffe, winds and leads through the entire old town in a north-south direction to Place Vaudémont. It runs along the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine and the Church of Cordeliers de Nancy, passes near Place Stanislas and also follows Place Saint-Epvre and the Basilica of Saint-Epvre.

The origin of the Grande Rue goes back to the beginning of the 14th century, when Duke Ferri III. moved his castle to this place.
