      Monument!

The Place de l'Alliance is part of the monumental ensemble of the 18th century listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. The work was directed by the king's first architect, Emmanuel Héré, who deployed for all of the famous places in Nancy the quintessence of his art as a builder by materializing the link between the two existing towns, the medieval town and the town of Charles Ill (built in the 16th century).

The fountain placed in its center is made up of a stone basin on which three old men representing rivers lean. Their shoulders support an entablature on which stands a triangular marble obelisk. Initially commissioned for the Carrière hemicycle, it was moved in 1756 and transformed in honor of the new alliance between Bourbons and Habsburg-Lorraine. On this occasion, a shield on which is inscribed "perenne foedus, anno 1756" (perpetual alliance) is added to the genius crowning the obelisk.
