Roman period and early Middle Ages

Various remains of walls, including parts of a closing wall with a gate, belong to a fortified late Roman settlement. Steps carved into the rock of the access path probably also date from this period. The square depressions on the plateau served as water reservoirs (cisterns).

Roman coins and shards of vessels mostly date from the 4th century AD. The settlement was also inhabited during the 5th to 7th centuries. The cisterns were probably converted into weaving cellars at that time. Vessels from North Africa and northern Italy provide evidence of extensive contacts. At that time there was a cemetery in Hellig Bungert and on Capölla, at the northeastern foot of the hill. At least one early medieval grave comes from the Hügei plateau next to the chapel.

A special feature of St. Georgenberg is the Ughür fountain. This naturally formed grotto was formerly used as a fresh water reservoir.
