It is a Protestant parish church which was already mentioned as a church in Nieuwerkerk around 1233. Nieuwerkerk became an independent parish when Ouwerkerk was separated. Sint John the Evangelist was replaced by a new late Gothic building in the 15th century. In 1490 the church was elevated to a collegiate church, and around 1500 the large long choir was added for the canons, giving the church a total length of 65 meters. The hexagonal top of the church tower is unusual for the region.
