The Steenzwaan is a remnant of a once very lively river.
The Zwemer used to be a channel between the Oosterschelde and the Gouwe (the Gouwe was the river that separated Schouwen and Duiveland).
The Gouwe silted up and was poldered and the Zwemer was dammed and disappeared.

    Only Steenzwaan remained.
The Steenzwaan is still a lively river. Salt seepage still comes from the soil and the nearby grasslands still offer salt vegetation.
Salicornia, sea aster, milkweed and numerous other salt lovers grow right in the middle of the arable land!

The higher parts of the ground are slightly sweeter and grasses and celery grow there.
The quiet, wet area is very popular with birds.
The Black-tailed Godwit, the Plover and the Spoonbills raise their young here and on the grasslands along the bank you can see the golden plovers and sandpipers searching for insects and soil animals.

Staatsbosbeheer has asked farmers to let their cattle graze along the creek. This keeps the vegetation short so that there are always open spaces where young, salty plants can continue to grow.
A nice resident of this region is the Norwegian vole. Unlike any other mouse, the mouse likes this wet and salty habitat and is present in large numbers here.
