Herzogenhügel is one of the oldest mountain ranges in Europe. There you can find stained slate and hornfels-like quartzite rocks interspersed with pyrite. As it weathers, it gives the rock a bright red-brown color to almost black. This place is of interest for geological reasons, in a quarry you can find the only rock of volcanic origin in the east of Belgium.

Mountain biking

When you go up to La Béole, when it's shining, you almost always have sunshine and hardly any wind.
It's very pleasant to drive up there and when you get to the top you have a great view over the High Fens towards Botrange.
