"When entering Kommern, the building complex made of red and yellow brick immediately catches the eye: directly above the historic town center, the largest closed half-timbered ensemble in the Rhineland, is the former Kommern Monastery. It looks back on an eventful history..."

At the end of the 19th century, the married couple Anna Sibilla and Josef Abels donated the "Institution Building in Commern", construction of which began in 1885. In 1887, the Vincentian Order took over the house. Under the name "St. Vincent's House", it served as inpatient and outpatient care for the sick and the poor (including a maternity ward). In addition, up to 15 nuns ran an orphanage, a kindergarten and a sewing and handicraft school. After the death of the founder Josef Abels, the house was renamed "St. Joseph's House" in 1908. In 1972, the Vincentians closed the house for financial reasons and sold it to the Catholic parish of St. Severinus (Kommern) for a symbolic D-Mark. A two-story building was built directly opposite the old monastery, into which the sisters moved to maintain a conference and retreat center until 2011. Several companies now use the modernized premises of the former monastery as business premises. These include an advertising agency and companies for real estate and financial services. The other units are used as apartments. Source: Wikipedia
