De Schaffelaar Castle as we know it today is therefore of a more recent date. On April 1, 1852, Jasper Hendrik laid Baron van Zuylen van Nievelt the first stone for the mansion. The Baron Barneveld spared no expense for his new home. For example, he ordered two and a half million red bricks and brought a large amount of marble from Italy.

The characteristic battlements, turrets, balustrades and window frames that give De Schaffelaar Castle its romantic appearance are thanks to the Bossche architect Arnoldus van Veggel. He was inspired by English neo-gothic and tudor style. Nowhere else in the Netherlands can you find a structure in which this style has been preserved so well. That is why De Schaffelaar Castle has the status of a National Monument and is one of the top 100 Dutch UNESCO monuments.
