The tree, a linden, was planted in 1930 to mark Belgium's 100th anniversary. Because of the planting during Armistice, the people in Assent also know it as a peace tree. Near the peace tree is the grave of Hilaire Gemoets, a young resistance fighter in WWII, who was shot by the Gestapo a few days before the liberation.
