Every two years, the Brenntrogrennen (drum trough race) is held in Groß Berkel. Participants paddle down the Humme River from the bridge on Koppelweg to the weir. The Humme River rises in the Teutoburg Forest and flows into the Weser after a course of almost 19 kilometers. The river's name comes from the Middle High German word "hummen," meaning "to hum."
