Many locals no longer know that this old school building, built in 1789-1790, exists. It is the oldest school building still preserved today in the former Liedern Werth district.
This building was built in the middle of the Mussum community and included a staff apartment and a classroom. The children were taught here for over 90 years until a new Catholic Marienschule was built in 1883 (approx. 300 m east of here).

In 1675, Prince-Bishop C.B. von Galen introduced compulsory schooling for all children aged 6-14. During the winter months, the farmer Johann Theodor Kleine-Heynck gave lessons in the weaving room of his house (today: the Wiesmann family "Meisters-Bur", Achterhook 4). While he worked at the loom, the catechism was read and learned by heart, but arithmetic and writing were not taught.
