They are really impressive in size, the Heck cattle, who live here year-round outside themselves. They are a breeding back of the aurochs extinct in Europe in the 16th century, which until then had been spread over almost all of Europe.
Here they actively pursue nature conservation by keeping meadows short. And every now and then one finds its way onto our plates. 🥩 🍽

The ERNA association and its aurochs

The Schrobach Foundation secured numerous areas in the Bünzau valley
for nature conservation and created a number of near-natural bodies of water. The Heck cattle of the ERNA association, which are similar to the extinct aurochs, are worth seeing. The robust cattle stay outside all year round and, as four-legged landscapers, ensure that the areas do not become overgrown. Rare plant and animal species are protected and promoted by the type of grazing. Only in very hard winters do the cattle have to be fed.

The association ERNA (extensive robust cattle husbandry in the Aukrug Nature Park), which was founded in the nature conservation ring, has been cultivating valuable grassland with its primeval Heck cattle since 2002. With a lot of voluntary commitment, the members take care of the cattle and the development of what are now three pastures (altogether 170 hectares) on the Bünzau, the Buckener Au and on the Kirchweddelbach in Fitzbek.

Due to the year-round, extensive grazing, a diverse vegetation structure develops on the meadows, which has a positive effect on many plant and animal species. We have also tried to make the areas wet and to make them even more attractive for animals such as amphibians and birds by adding bodies of water and new trees.
Our more than 100 Heck cattle are an impressive crossbreed of different breeds, which are said to come close in appearance to the aurochs that were exterminated in the 17th century. Since the 1930s, the eponymous Heck brothers have been crossing Spanish bulls, Scottish highland cattle, Hungarian steppe cattle and several other original cattle breeds.
