The small settlement of Trostadt is located on the site of the former Trostadt monastery. The town still uses some of the existing buildings of the old monastery complex. The monastery was intended for the choir nuns from the Henneberg counts' house. Originally they were housed in the Veßra monastery, but after a fire there a new location was sought. From 1175 onwards an existing monastery courtyard was therefore expanded here.
The monastery was abandoned during the Peasants' War. Mercenaries were recruited to protect the monastery, but they preferred to look after the numerous beer barrels. When the looters arrived, the soldiers did not lift a finger. After another attack in 1579 the last women left the monastery.
