Littlebeck is a tiny village with a lenghty past; it is hard to imagine today's picturesque rural idyll was actually once a centre of alum mining in the 17th to 19th centuries.
Alum, by the way, is used in dyeing as well as tanning leather. A hundred tons of shale would be produced in order to extract one ton of alum, so it seems remarkable the surrounding land appears so unscarred.

A tiny hamlet with scattered cottages, farms, and a chapel, giving it a secluded, timeless feel. The road through the village winds down a steep road with a picturesque ford that crosses the Little Beck stream.
