The "Kaaipoort" is the only one of four city gates in Aardenburg that has been preserved. The basic form, also called the "Westpoort", was built in the 13th century, and its current appearance dates from 1650. Originally, as the name suggests, the "Kaaipoort" was located at the port of Aardenburg, which was filled in in 1813. The gate was richly decorated with coats of arms in 1604 as a reminder of the conquest of Aardenburg by Prince Maurits, the founder of today's Netherlands: The coat of arms of Aardenburg, formerly called "Rodenburg", is symbolized by a red castle on a field of gold. Two red lions were added to it as a thank you for defending the city against the French in 1672. The passage is also decorated with a stone lion and a wind indicator with a tulip
