The source of the Este is on the western edge of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve, not far from the B 3 near Wintermoor on the Chaussee, a district of Schneverdingen. From there it flows northwards. The Este only has constant water from Cordshagen. Continuing in this direction it flows through Kakenstorf, Hollenstedt, Moisburg and Buxtehude. A few kilometres further to the north-east the Este crosses the Altes Land and flows into the Elbe around 2 km after the Hamburg border near Cranz.
The Este is 62.3 km long.
