The Water Tower - the landmark of the city of Genthin
The construction of the Genthin water tower was based on a decision of the Genthiner city council meeting in 1933. On January 30, 1934, a Tuesday, 10.00 clock, was in the Hafenstraße (now Geschwister Scholl road), by Dr. med. Netzband, the then mayor, made the groundbreaking ceremony. The construction period of the tower was around two years. The tower served v.a. to create reserves to compensate for the water shortage in the city during the hot summer months and to secure the necessary pressure in the supply lines.
Since 1995, the tower no longer serves as a storage. The water tower is today a technical monument.
The artistic design of the water tower was made by Genthiner sculptor Bernd Schmidt. He designed and created eight figures, each 3.20 m high, which were mounted around the tower on a pedestal. Today only four of the figures can be seen.
The observation deck of the tower is a popular place to enjoy the magnificent 360 degree view of the city and the surrounding area. And if the 225 steps to the platform are too exhausting, then you can gain an insight into the works of regional and supra-regional artists in the rooms of the Kunstverein.
