The trebuchet was a siege machine used since the first centuries of the early Middle Ages, with the function of hurling large projectiles (boulders, burned wineskins) against fortresses and besieged cities. Its operation is very simple: by means of a counterweight the mobile arm is raised which in turn causes a rotation of the projectile which is released - from a hemp net - after having traveled a semi-circumference. The only machine of medieval invention and not of Roman origin, it had colossal dimensions and required a team of up to 50 artillerymen.
