The exact time when a church was founded in Geestenthorp (Geestendorf, today part of Geestemünde), first mentioned in 1139, is not known. However, it is believed that the local peasants built a small chapel in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the early 13th century. Apart from some boulder masonry at the base of the tower, the Romanesque-style St. Mary's Church is built of brick in the style of a monastery.
