The nature and landscape conservation area is largely shaped by the course of the Este. The area, which is divided into four sections, largely comprises a near-natural section of the Este valley with surrounding floodplain areas. The occurrence of the "leafless flax leaf" is unique. First mentioned in 1849, the Este valley is the last of what were once ten sites in Lower Saxony. This inconspicuous plant inhabits sandy, acidic and warm locations on heaths and lean grasslands.

Large parts of the Este lowlands are forested. Alder-ash floodplain forests of various sizes and characteristics often grow along watercourses, all of which are tied to the most natural possible flow dynamics. Alder-ash floodplain forests are a priority FFH habitat type, as is the moor forest, which is present in the Este area. In the higher areas of the Este lowlands, other FFH habitat types of the forest have been able to establish themselves.

The open and semi-open areas also often have European legal significance due to the presence of grassland, heath and moorland habitat types. They are also the habitat of numerous, mostly threatened and endangered species such as otters, sea, river and brook lampreys or the green clubtail.

The nature reserve serves to protect the FFH area 036 "Este, Bötersheimer Heide, Glüsinger Bruch and Osterbruch" - nlwkn.niedersachsen.de/naturschutzgebiete/natur-und-landschaftsschutzgebiet-estetal-189375.html

This entire hiking trail is a single highlight that can only continue to exist if we abide by the local rules and allow the magic of nature to work its magic on us. There is, however, something that I particularly liked. There is this tiny section in the middle Este valley, right near Kakenstorf, where you can walk over a short footbridge. In my opinion, the most beautiful point of contact with the Este.

This is certainly the most beautiful stretch of the Este; nowhere else are you so close to the Este for so long.
